Abstract: the pantropical genus bauhinia, fabaceae, known popularly as cow's foot, is widely used in folk medicine as antidiabetic. behavioral effects of the ethanolic extract and ethereal, aqueous and ethyl acetate fractions from b. platypetala benth. ex hemsl. leaves were studied in male swiss mice. the ethanolic extract and fractions were administered intraperitoneally and its effects on spontaneous motor activity (total motility, locomotion, rearing and grooming behavior) were monitored. anxiolytic-like properties were studied in the elevated plus-maze test and the possible antidepressant-like actions were evaluated in the forced swimming test. the results revealed that only the highest dose of the ethereal fraction (50 mg/kg, i.p.) caused a significant decrease in total motility, locomotion and rearing. sole dose injected (50 mg/kg) of ethanolic extract and ethereal fractions increased the exploration of the elevated plus-maze open arms in a similar way to that of diazepam (2 mg/kg, i.p.). in the forced swimming test, the ethanolic extract and their fractions (12.5, 25 or 50 mg/kg) was not as effective as paroxetine (10 or 20 mg/kg, i.p.) and imipramine (25 or 50 mg/kg, i.p.) in reducing immobility. these results suggest that some of the components of the ethanolic extract and of the ethereal fraction from b. platypetala, such as p-cymene, phytol, d-lactic acid, hexadecanoic acid, among others, may have anxiolytic-like properties, which deserve further investigation. furthermore, the results obtained indicate that ethanolic extract from b. platypetala and their fractions do not present antidepressive properties. however, these properties cannot be related to the chemical constituents identified in this specie.

Abstract: this study was performed with the objective to identify the prevalence of colonization by staphylococcus aureus in nursing professionals from a teaching hospital in pernambuco, and evaluate the resistance profile of these isolates. to do this, we performed a cross-sectional study where biological samples were collected from the hands and nasal cavities of the subjects. s. aureus was identified using agar (blood agar and mannitol salt) via catalase and coagulase tests. the sensitivity profile was determined by kirby bauer technique and determination of methicillin resistance was performed with oxacillin screening with sodium chloride (nacl) addition. of the 151 professionals evaluated, 39 were colonized which showed a prevalence of 25.8%. among the variables studied, age and use of ppe were associated with colonization by the organism. of all the isolates, only five were resistant to methicillin.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to verify and describe, from a gender focus, the associations between gender and specific postoperative pain variables in pediatrics. this is a cross-sectional study of 77 children between 6 and 13 years of age (m=9 years; sd=2.2 years), asa i and ii, 77.9% from low-income classes, 68.8% boys and 32.8% girls. data were collected on the first postoperative (1st po) day through semi-structured interviews and four measurement scales. the main baseline diseases were adenotonsillitis and fractures. prevalence of pain on the 1st po was 91.7% for girls and 75.5% for boys (p>0.05). no association was found between pain intensity and gender. the most used pain descriptors were it cuts and it squeezes. the preferred scale was the efmc (with faces from a brazilian cartoon: monica's gang). pediatric pain management is still inadequate and gender may influence the pain response.

Abstract: purpose: to assess the prevalence of streptococcus agalactiae, a group b streptococcus, in pregnant women, and their possible risk factors, as well as the impact of perinatal colonization and antimicrobial susceptibility. methods: we evaluated 213 pregnant women from 20 weeks of gestation, regardless of risk factors, attending a tertiary teaching hospital. the technique used was a single sterile swab to collect secretions from the vaginal and perianal regions. the newly obtained samples were stored in stuart transport medium and taken to the laboratory, where they were inoculated in todd-hewitt selective medium supplemented with gentamicin (8 ug/ml) and nalidixic acid (15 ug/ml), with subsequent cultivation on blood agar plates. the materials were tested with gram, catalase with hydrogen peroxide and camp (christie, atkins, munch-petersen), and results were serologically confirmed with the streptococcal grouping kit, oxoid?. the positive samples were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. we also assessed socioeconomic, reproductive, clinical, and obstetric variables, and newborn care. statistical analysis was performed with epi-info 6.04. results: the prevalence of colonization obtained by field tests was 9.8% by camp test, but only 4.2% by serology. the only protective factor was white skin color (p=0.01, 0.45>or>0.94, 95%ci). there was no difference in prevalence of group b streptococcus regarding other reproductive and obstetric variables. infection occurred in only one of the newborns from colonized mothers; although it was revealed infection with pseudomonas spp. high resistance to ampicillin (4/9), cephalothin (4/9), penicillin (4/9), erythromycin (3/9), clindamycin (7/9), and cloramphenicol (1/9) was detected. conclusions: the infection rate was lower than that found in other studies, although a high rate of resistance to antibiotics commonly used for treatment was detected. since there are no studies on the prevalence of group b streptococcus in ceará, we

Abstract: Objective: to present a protocol for the Consultation of Nursing for the Alzheimer carriers in a Center of Reference of the City of Recife (PE). Methods: descriptive, exploratory study, bibliographical survey. Guided this study the Zagobel guidelines: problems collecting, systematized comment, situation diagnostic, care plan and register. The population was constituted five Alzheimer patients carriers. A questionnaire for the data collect was used. Results: the data had been analyzed descriptive that resulted in the protocol elaboration for the Alzheimer carriers, in the Nursing plan interventions as well as in the Nursing diagnosis identification: 1) Process of Modified Thought; 2) Familiar Risk for Modified Processes; 3) Risk for Consuming of the Person who Care; 4) Deficit in the Selfcare. Conclusion: the benefits not only extend to the patient and its family, as well as to the Nursing, since, with this practical, each time more the care based on scientific knowledge are devoted, allowing the nurse systemize the nursing assistance and describe plan care action for the Alzheimer carriers, based on Nursing diagnosis.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to analyze the scientificity of Betty Neuman Systems Theory. For that, the evaluation method proposed by Meleis was performed, restricting itself to the critical analysis of addressing the components of clarity, consistency and practical the utility of this theory. The analyzed model presents fundamental value and applicability within the nursing science; therefore it allows for professional enrichment and favors the practice of care aiming at patient recovery, prioritizing a holistic care view that helps to construct a state of well-being and a balanced client.
